In this presentation, you will hear about the life and activities of the executioners Beckius in Gothenburg.
Nicklas and Carl Gustaf Beckius were executioners in Gothenburg and western Sweden in the 19th century. Nicklas purchased a new executioner's axe which later passed down to his son Carl Gustaf. With this axe, murderers, robbers, and pirates were beheaded. They carried out death sentences on maids, farmhands, farmers, widows, and gardeners.
And since at this time there still existed qualified death penalties—when death itself wasn't enough as punishment—they also executed hand amputations, hangings, and burnings at the stake. Also, hear about the salary negotiation at the gallows hill, the rope that broke, and the self-spillings buried in the forest.
Presenter: - Jan Palmén: A criminal history guide with a background as an analyst within the police and the Economic Crimes Authority. He has a passionate interest in history and constantly delves into archives to uncover more knowledge about Gothenburg's criminal history.
